A Year with professor Brady I remember being in high school and almost everyday out of senior year you hear a teacher say “in college the professors aren’t going to care about you”. Coming into my freshman year i was your average scared freshman, with no clue as for what’s to come. In fact, about two weeks into college i was ready to withdrawal and continue on my journey as being a full time aspiring artist. It was hearing professor Brady’s enthusiastic personality, and seeing her love for what she does and helping students that kept me around. I don’t know where to begin with all the fishbowls, lectures, and class laughs from both the fall semester and the spring semester i have learned an abundance of things from different genres of literature to life long lessons. Every person has their own different outlook on love. After annotating the poems “A Dream” by Edgar Allen Poe and “Beneath the Perfect Sky” by John Mark Green, immediately brought my emotions back from when I wrote my song called “Close your Eyes”. Each of these works of literature expressed feelings of hope and longing. As examined in both poems the authors used certain words to help create the bittersweet tone when talking about love. Being a music artist myself when writing “close your eyes” i incorporated specific words in order to express my feelings of how love can be bittersweet, being that i was longing to see my loved one. Both the poems, and the song are connected through the way each individual displayed the bittersweet tone to highlight the theme that Love is patience. Asiah Smikle English 102 Prof. Brady Pub #2 When you hear the word illusion you think of a deceptive appearance or impression, a thing that is likely to be wrongly perceived or interpreted. In the Play A StreetCar Named Desire, by Tennessee Williams we see this struggle of illusion vs reality with Blanche. She runs of to live with her sister Stella in seek of a false life, rather than coming to terms with what has happened in reality. In this day and age we see a lot of those same tendencies on social media outlets. Everyone wants to create a false image of who they desire to be, generally hiding the person they truly are. In the last seen before Blanche is about to be taken away by the doctor Stella states “I couldn’t believe her story and go on living with Stanley” (Stella, 1232). Blanche told Stella that Stanley raped her but Stella refuses to believe it, although she knows that Blanche is telling the truth. Asiah Smikle Pub 3 Egalitarianism is the doctrine that all people are equal and deserve to have equal rights and opportunity. When hearing the definition of Egalitarianism the first thing that may come to mind is one of the most famous speeches by Martin Luther King called the “ I Have A Dream” speech. King was a major advocate for human rights and equal treatments, no matter your gender, color of your skin, what religion you are, or where you came from. Gender inequality has been a detriment to women’s lives all around the world in the post-modern era. The first woman’s rights movement was conducted on July 19 to the 20th in Seneca Falls. In the United States today women are seen fairly equally because of the help of all the feminists who fought for those right before some of us were even born yet. Asiah Smikle Prof. Brady English 102 Paper #2 16 April 2019 Love is A Battle and we are it’s Warriors In literature, authors often utilize symbolism, using something tangible or even a person to represent an idea. Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. Authors as well as song writers use symbolism in there pieces when one thing is meant to represent something else. The symbol will be one of three types: archetype, universal or contextual. The use of symbolism helps to create meaning and emotion in a story or song. Often times, the symbol being used to help create that emotion is easy for the reader to understand. In Hills like white Elephants by Ernest Hemingway and The Storm by Kate Chopin they use symbolism to emphasize the theme; love is a battle and we are the warriors.
